Lisanne Wepler CV

My name is Lisanne Wepler and trees are my main theme in art, art history and life. Sometimes I wonder where passion begins to turn into obsession – I don't have an answer to that yet; so far, this theme fills me with positive energy. (I grew up in Schenklengsfeld – under the canopy of the oldest and biggest Lime tree of Germany. Maybe she is responsible for all this treempathy…)

My incitement is 'Trees – our neighbours'. I live in Leiden, a medium-sized city in the forest-less south of the Netherlands, and I mainly observe/draw/etch/protect urban trees. Many people realise in these days how essential trees are for all city dwellers. But that does not mean that everything is being done to provide these trees with the best possible living conditions. The average lifespan of an urban tree is 25-30 years [!!].

Last year, I published a book featuring my tree etchings, pairing them with texts by 24 authors (https://drukdrukpaint.com/drukdrukprint/editions). Each person told a short story about their ‘tree neighbour’. I am continuing with this project, both as a graphic artist and as an art historian.

While researching art and trees on the internet, I found out about your group and was immediately thrilled: there are artists who only deal with trees! In the country with so many ancient trees and a rich ‘tree art’ landscape! I would be delighted if my city tree roots could be connected to your network – across the sea and Brexit (or better underneath it).
