My work is a direct and embodied response to the beauty of local trees. Here in Norfolk, it is the dance of the oak and ash set against open landscapes, stark in winter, stately in summer.  Oaks seem to be the immovable survivors, singular and often immense. Ash trees are more delicate, subtle and flowing (and of course recently affected by dieback).  I try to record ‘gestalt’ interlockings of light and dark, aiming to chime with the sense of energy and change in these trees through the seasons.  The intention is to get to the essence of things, often by using calligraphic mark-making. This is inspired by oriental ideas about using brush and inks. The immediacy and simplicity of the approach also suits woodcut prints and brush decoration on ceramics.

I feel I can bring a bold, calligraphic and highly energised approach to compliment the many ways of responding to trees within the Arborealists group. My ink drawings often use homemade oxide inks to exploit a depth of matt black against white, a contrast which is further explored in woodcut prints. My pots are often made with clay taken from the ditch, adding to the intended direct and personal connection with the landscape.
